Our Story

Crowes Butchers was founded in 1970 by George Crowe, a man with a passion for quality produce and honest service. George’s vision was simple: to provide the people of Cavan with the best cuts of meat, sourced with care and prepared with skill.

Through three generations, that same passion has been passed down, with each new chapter building on the Crowe family’s proud reputation. Over the decades, we’ve kept true to our roots offering the best of traditional butchery while also embracing new ideas, modern techniques, and innovative flavours that excite today’s customers.

Our name has become a trusted part of daily life in Cavan: a place where families return generation after generation, knowing they’ll find the quality and service they can count on.

At Crowes, we specialise in premium beef, lamb, pork, and poultry, expertly butchered and prepared in-house. We offer everything from artisan cuts to value-ready meals and convenient meat bundles, perfect for busy households who still care about great food.

Barry John Sausages

A true point of pride at Crowes is our famous Barry John Sausages. Created using traditional recipes with a twist, Barry John’s award-winning sausages bring together top-quality ingredients and inventive flavours that have captured the imagination of customers far and wide. Barry’s passion and skill even earned him a Guinness World Record for sausage-making a testament to the energy and creativity we bring to everything we do.

🕰 Our Story: A Family Tradition Since the 1960s

1960s – Learning the Craft
George began his butchery career in Rathmines, Dublin. Starting as a messenger boy, he worked his way through the slaughterhouse, meat counter, and shop floor. He also trained under Mr. Ryan in Crumlin, honing the skills that would shape a lifetime.

1969 – A Leap of Faith
George purchased a premises beside the Dew Drop Inn, setting the stage for something special.

15th May 1970 – First Shop Opens
At just 21, George returned home and opened the first butcher shop — a proud moment that marked the beginning of our family legacy.

1971 – A Family Begins
George married Anne in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, and together they built not just a business, but a family too.

1980s–90s – A Family Trade
The business grew alongside the family. Pig haulage, livestock dealing, and running the local inn were all part of daily life. Four children — Fergus, Sharon, Georgina, and Barry John — grew up immersed in the craft.

2001 – Award-Winning Quality
Barry John won his first All-Ireland for Pudding & Link sausages and took home the prestigious Butcher of the Year award.

2006 – First Major Expansion
With growing demand, the shop expanded — gaining more land and a full second floor.

2007 – Best in the Country
We were honoured with the Craft Butchers Association’s Butcher Shop of the Year award.

2010s–2020s – The Next Generation
Fergus completed his butchery apprenticeship in Dublin. Barry John earned Master Butcher status at DIT Cathal Brugha Street. Aaron joined the team too — graduating from the Butchery Excellence Scheme in Tyrone and Butchercraft in Dublin.

 

2019 Barry John wins a Guiness World Record!

2021 – Revamp No. 3

Our third major revamp brought fresh design while preserving our roots. Still in the family, Fergus and Aaron now run the shop with pride and precision.

2025 – Online Store Launched
